Farewell, thou art too dear for my possessing,
And like enough thou know’st thy estimate.
The charter of thy worth gives thee releasing;
My bonds in thee are all determinate.
For how do I hold thee but by thy granting,
And for that riches where is my deserving?
The cause of this fair gift in me is wanting,
And so my patent back again is swerving.
Thyself thou gav’st, thy own worth then not knowing,
Or me, to whom thou gav’st it, else mistaking;
So thy great gift, upon misprision growing,
Comes home again, on better judgement making.
Thus have I had thee as a dream doth flatter,
In sleep a king, but waking no such matter.

再会！你太贵重了，我没法保有你，你也多半明白你自己的价值：你的才德给予你自由的权利；我跟你订的盟约就到此为止。你不答应，我怎能把你占有？对于这样的福气，我哪儿相配？我没有接受这美好礼物的理由，给我的特许证因而就掉头而归。你当时不知道自己有多高的身价，或者是把我看错了，才给我深情；所以，你这份厚礼，送错了人家，终于回家了，算得是明智的决定。我曾经有过你，像一场阿谀的迷梦，我在那梦里称了王，醒来一场空。

注释

诗人向爱友告别，并且撤销了他们以前因错误而订的盟约。但诗人似乎仍希望能从这种完全的解约而引起爱友的回心转意。——第二行：你的才德这样大，而我的才德不如你，同你的才德不相称，因此你可以跟我解约。第八行：“特许证”指友谊。第十二行：“回家”指礼物被爱友收回，参照第33首。
