So are you to my thoughts as food to life,
Or as sweet-seasoned showers are to the ground;
And for the peace of you I hold such strife
As ‘twixt a miser and his wealth is found;
Now proud as an enjoyer, and anon
Doubting the filching age will steal his treasure;
Now counting best to be with you alone,
Then bettered that the world may see my pleasure;
Sometime all full with feasting on your sight,
And by and by clean starved for a look;
Possessing or pursuing no delight
Save what is had or must from you be took.
Thus do I pine and surfeit day by day,
Or gluttoning on all, or all away.

我的思想需要你，像生命盼食物，或者像大地渴望及时的甘霖；为了你给我的安慰，我斗争，痛苦，好像守财奴对他的财物不放心：有时候是个享受者，挺骄傲，立刻—— 又害怕老年把他的财物偷去；刚觉得跟你单独地相处最快乐，马上又希望世界能看见我欢愉：有时候我大嚼一顿，把你看个够，不久又想看，因为我饿得厉害；任何欢乐我都不追求或占有，除了从你那儿得到的欢乐以外。我就这样子一天挨饿一天饱，不是没吃的，就是满桌的佳肴。

注释

诗人对他爱友说，诗人需要爱友正如生命需要食物，大地需要雨水。他有时觉得自己与爱友单独相处时最快乐，有时又希望世人能知道他这种快乐；有时他因为有了爱友而骄傲，有时又怕“老年”会偷掉爱友；有时他把他爱友看够了，像大吃一顿，有时又饿得慌，想看爱友一眼；这样时饿时饱，时乐时惧，正如守财奴守着财物，诗人守着爱友。——第四行中的“他”与第六行中的“他”均指“守财奴”。第六行中的“老年”意味着“死”。第九行：参照第47首第五行。
