No longer mourn for me when I am dead
Than you shall hear the surly sullen bell
Give warning to the world that I am fled
From this vile world with vilest worms to dwell.
Nay, if you read this line, remember not
The hand that writ it, for I love you so
That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot,
If thinking on me then should make you woe.
O, if, I say, you look upon this verse,
When I, perhaps, compounded am with clay,
Do not so much as my poor name rehearse,
But let your love even with my life decay,
Lest the wise world should look into your moan,
And mock you with me after I am gone.

译文

只要你听见丧钟向世人怨抑地通告说我已经离开恶浊的人世，要去和更恶的恶虫居住在一起：你就不要再为我而呜咽不止；你读这诗的时候，也不要想到写它的手；因为我这样爱你，假如一想到我，你就要苦恼，我愿意被忘记在你甜蜜的思想里。或者，我说，有一天你看到这首诗，那时候我也许已经化成土灰，那么请不要念我可怜的名字；最好你的爱也跟我生命同毁；怕聪明世界会看穿你的悲恸，在我去后利用我来把你嘲弄。

注释

诗人请他的爱友将来千万别为诗人的死而悲伤。诗人教他爱友连“哀悼的眼泪”（见第31首第六行）也不必洒，只需忘掉就行，免得苦恼或受人嘲笑。——第三行：“恶虫”与上一首第七行中的“恶虫”不同，这里是指使尸体在坟墓中腐烂的虫。第十三行：“聪明世界”的聪明，就是聪明到不对已经过去的事物悲伤。“看穿”是反语。
