Not marble, nor the gilded monuments
Of princes, shall outlive this pow’rful rhyme,
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone, besmeared with sluttish time.
When wasteful war shall statues overturn,
And broils root out the work of masonry,
Nor Mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.
‘Gainst death and all oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom.
So, till the judgment that yourself arise,
You live in this, and dwell in lovers’ eyes.

译文

白石，或者帝王们镀金的纪念碑都不能比这强有力的诗句更长寿；你留在诗句里将放出永恒的光辉, 你留在碑石上就不免尘封而腐朽。毁灭的战争是会把铜像推倒，火并也会把巨厦连根儿烧光，但是战神的利剑或烈火毁不掉你刻在人们心头的鲜明印象。对抗着湮灭一切的敌意和死，你将前进；人类将永远歌颂你，连那坚持到世界末日的人之子也将用眼睛来称赞你不朽的美丽。到最后审判你复活之前，你—— 活在我诗中，住在恋人们眼睛里。

注释

又说到诗有战胜时间的力量。诗人对其爱友保证说，他（爱友）将永远被人们记着，哪怕到白石和帝王的纪念碑都被时间销毁了，哪怕到世界的末日。按基督教有所谓最后审判在世界末日举行。——第三、四行：你墓碑上的铭文是不能使你不朽的，只有我的诗能使你不朽。第十四行意谓：“你将活在我的诗中，同时反映在读这些诗的恋人们的眼睛里。”
