Against that time, if ever that time come,
When I shall see thee frown on my defects,
Whenas thy love hath cast his utmost sum,
Called to that audit by advised respects;
Against that time when thou shalt strangely pass,
And scarcely greet me with that sun, thine eye,
When love, converted from the thing it was,
Shall reasons find of settled gravity.
Against that time do I ensconce me here
Within the knowledge of mine own desert,
And this my hand against myself uprear,
To guard the lawful reasons on thy part.
To leave poor me thou hast the strength of laws,
Since why to love I can allege no cause.

译文

恐怕那日子终于免不了要来临，那时候，我见你对我的缺点皱眉，你的爱已经付出了全部恩情，种种理由劝告你把总账算回；那日子要来，那时你陌生地走过去，不用那太阳——你的眼睛来迎接我，那时候，爱终于找到了严肃的论据，可以从原来的地位上一下子变过；那日子要来，我得先躲在反省里，凭自知之明，了解自己的功罪，我于是就这样举手，反对我自己，站在你那边，辩护你合法的行为：法律允许你把我这可怜人抛去，因我提不出你必须爱我的根据。

注释

诗人恐怕他爱友将来不再爱他，于是预先准备迎接这不幸的到来，用这种方法：警告自己不配承受他爱友的爱，这样，他爱友将来如有摈弃诗人的行为，也可以算是合法的了。原诗中有一些法律名词。——第十一行：“举手”即指证人在法庭上的一种行为。
